Local Food Action Plan

U.S. EPA and the Appalachian Regional Commission

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Community Revitalization (OCR), in funding partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) provides technical assistance to ARC

communities through the Local Foods, Local Places program (LFLP). Working with other federal partners, LFLP delivers technical assistance that helps communities utilize their local food system to accelerate environmentally sustainable downtown and neighborhood revitalization through a community-driven approach that emphasizes community engagement, local partnerships, and equity as cornerstones.

The Pittsburgh neighborhood of Carrick was selected as one of the LFLP communities in FY2024.

Our Approach

Fourth Economy helped facilitate public workshops with the Carrick community; supported pre- and post-workshop planning calls with Carrick leadership and residents; and developed an LFLP community action plan report as a final deliverable.

The Results

The resulting asset-based local food action plan will help the Carrick community build a more durable local food system, improve access and local demand for healthy foods, improve the local economy; promote job creation; improve environmental outcomes; promote more active lifestyles; as well as improve social cohesion and other social determinants of health.
