Economic Strategy
100 Resilient Cities, pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC), was dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. 100RC supported the adoption and incorporation of a view of resilience that includes not just the shocks—earthquakes, fires, floods, etc.—but also the stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day to day or cyclical basis. Examples of these stresses include high unemployment; an overtaxed or inefficient public transportation system; endemic violence; or chronic food and water shortages.
Cities participating in the 100RC network were able to engage Fourth Economy Consulting for pro bono assistance with better understanding or developing solutions to their economic shocks and stresses.
Our Approach
Our team worked with Atlanta, GA after the collapse of the I-85 bridge to assist them in supporting affected businesses. We worked with Miami to understand the challenges and opportunities for people of color looking to enter construction trades; this work allowed the Chief Resilience Officer and regional economic development organization to work together on addressing this issue. Additionally, we worked with the City of Pittsburgh to develop an Investment Prospectus that included detailed descriptions of the costs, funding sources, and timelines for each of the action steps outlined in the One PGH resilience strategy. The Mayor is currently using the Prospectus to raise funding to implement the strategy.
The Results
Our participation as a Platform Partner provided clients looking to solve tough problems and create a resilient economy with the capacity they needed. This work also enabled us to gain a better understanding of how cities are thinking about economic development through the lens of resilience, and the unique engagement, analysis, and research tools that are needed to support that work.
