Nontraditional Data Landscape Analysis
Safe States Alliance
Safe States Alliance is a national non-profit organization and professional association dedicated to strengthening the practice of injury and violence prevention (IVP). Safe States is the only national association of public health injury and violence prevention professionals representing all U.S. states and territories.
Safe States has identified that current data collection and analysis practices lack the context needed to fully understand nontraditional data sources and how that data translates to practice. Specifically, IVP datasets often have limited demographic fields or variables for robust analyses, and many IVP programs lack access to skilled staff to analyze and interpret data. Fourth Economy was engaged to help enhance data collection, analysis, and dissemination practices within IVP.
Our Approach
Fourth Economy will conduct a comprehensive landscape analysis of nontraditional data sources. This will include:
A thorough examination of how nontraditional data is being collected, by whom, and in partnership with whom.
An analysis of the challenges to data collection.
The development of a data translation document for public health partners, hospitals, and health departments, focusing on how different groups collect, use, and interpret "local" or "community-specific" data.
Analysis of best practices and tools developed by organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Indian Health Services.
A comprehensive report summarizing the findings.
