Age-Friendly Livability Dashboard

Maine
THE CLIENT

AARP Maine is the state office of AARP, which empowers people to choose how they live as they age. AARP primarily serves individuals ages 50+ and has 38 million members nationwide. Maine's population is the oldest in the U.S., so elder issues like aging in place, social participation, and access to community services and age-friendly resources are especially important.

THE CHALLENGE

The Age-Friendly Livability Dashboard project builds on the work of community Age-Friendly Action Plans to supplement community livability indicators. Age-Friendly communities engage residents in a process to identify the community’s needs, and develop and implement an action plan to address those needs.

OUR APPROACH

We initially worked with a pilot cohort of four communities to develop the dashboard: Bangor, Bowdoinham, Madison, and Portland. A video describes our engagement process more. A year after the dashboard was successfully rolled out, we expanded the project to eleven new communities across the state.

THE RESULTS

The results of our project was an online dashboard.

The dashboard accomplishes three primary and interrelated needs for communities in various stages of their Age-Friendly Action Planning Process and Review by documenting existing assets and community resources, identifying persistent needs, and displaying progress towards goals and activities:

  1. Age-Friendly Resources are displayed on an online interactive map;

  2. Livability Data track a wide variety of demographic and community data;

  3. Community Goals and Activities look at progress towards goals and activities for specific communities across different livability areas.

In total, the dashboard tracks more than 300 Community Goals and Activities and 1,200 Age-Friendly Resources.
